This week's game with North Carolina is a must-win for the Wolfpack if N.C. State hopes to keep its dream of a bowl bid alive. But the game is more meaningful than even that.

Though the Pack is 3-0 against the other state schools, and though each win brings bragging rights over the rest of the locals, none carries the impact of beating the Tar Heels. Beating UNC can serve as a bright spot in a down campaign; losing can make the entire year a failure.

Put bluntly, the fans of these schools don't much like each other, and that intense dislike usually spills over onto the field. Moreover, at the athletics awards banquet at the end of the year, athletic director Lee Fowler asks that any member of a team that beat North Carolina that year stand up for recognition.
